People ride Bird scooters in Santa Monica, California, on July 13, 2018. To do so, Bird is expanding its Bird Platform program, which licenses its business model to local operators who want to start a scooter business in exchange for Bird getting a 20% cut of the revenues. On Thursday, the $2 billion company is announcing that it has expanded the Bird Platform to Canada, New Zealand and Latin America. Bird’s strategy means scooter businesses in local markets get operated by entrepreneurs who know the city and its regulations. While Bird operates its own scooter business in the Europe and U.S., it hasn't ruled out expanding into more areas in the future.
