SHAH ALAM: Beginning in October, only foreign workers who have been fingerprinted for identification under the biometric system will be able to undergo medical examination pending employment. Immigration Department director-general Datuk Seri Mustafar Ali said the move was necessary to curb the entry of communicable diseases into the country. "The spread of these diseases here is something that we cannot accept and that is why these measures have been initiated," Mustafar told a press conference Tuesday at the soft launch of the biometric system for foreign workers medical screening at a clinic here. He said the move was also due to the high expenses that would be incurred in treating unhealthy foreign workers if they were allowed into the country. He added that the biometric system for medical screening was also to prevent other people from going for the screening in the place of the actual workers.
