AFP via Getty ImagesThe Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced an immediate commitment of up to $100 million for coronavirus relief on Wednesday. The commitment is a ten-fold increase from the foundation’s initial $10 million pledge announced last month. Bill Gates is one of a handful of billionaires who have donated so far to the coronavirus outbreak, which has triggered a global health emergency, sent markets tumbling, and killed nearly 500 and counting. Funds will help public health authorities strengthen emergency centers, implement effective disease surveillance efforts and improve treatment capacity. This response should be guided by science, not fear, and it should build on the steps that the World Health Organization has taken to date.”
