The report found that the project was doomed from the start – probably something National should have picked up on back in 2012. Not surprisingly, the Government liked that report so much it swiftly commissioned a second one for when the road actually opens. It has three large projects whose costs are as yet only partly funded, which will likely be subject to the same rampant cost inflation as the Upgrade roads. The Government is likely to face a repeat of the Upgrade saga later this year when the final costs of the LGWM projects are revealed. That scheme could be the largest infrastructure project in recent memory, with a price tag to match.
