Bill to affect health sector negatively: IMA chief

more-inThe proposed National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill will have serious adverse consequences for the nation’s health sector and affect the future of not just doctors but patients too, Ravi Wankhedkar, president, Indian Medical Association (IMA), has said. Dr. Wankhedkar, who was in the city, leading IMA’s Bharat Yatra to campaign against the NMC Bill, was talking to media persons here on Sunday. The Bharat Yatra campaign was part of IMA’s strategy to generate nation-wide opinion on the proposed NMC. The NMC Bill, which seeks to allow practitioners of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy, to practise modern medicine once they completed a short-term ‘bridge’ course, would lead to large-scale quackery and would be detrimental to the nation’s health sector, Dr. Wankhedkar said. Dr. Wankhedkar praised the State’s health indicators which were almost on par with those of the West and which were the result of the hard work of doctors, health workers, and policy makers.
