Bike registration not entirely a bad idea – The Manila Times

Along with that, the IATF-EID also said it would require local governments to create safe bicycle lanes along streets, although that aspect of the plan has gotten off to a decidedly shaky start in most areas. That visible lack of value in exchange for fees and other requirements is the crux of the public resistance to the idea of bicycle registration. Cebu City’s Sugbo Bike Lanes Board proposed a network of bike lane routes as recently as July 2019, but that proposal was likewise never acted upon. The public outcry against bicycle registration is entirely justified because of the government’s complete lack of attention to the needs of bicyclists, but the idea of bicycle registration is not unreasonable, if managed correctly, and is commonplace in many jurisdictions around the world. In exchange for registration, particularly when fees are collected, the government then provides and maintains designated bicycle lanes and other infrastructure needed for safe biking.
