Biden visits Bob Dole after cancer diagnosis

(CNN) President Joe Biden visited former Sen. Bob Dole Saturday afternoon, according to the White House, after the longtime Kansas senator announced earlier in the week that he had been diagnosed with stage four lung cancer. The two had served in the Senate together and Dole is a "close friend" of the President, the White House said. Dole, the 1996 Republican presidential nominee, was one of the key Republicans to say plainly after the November election that Biden had won. "The election is over and (Joe) Biden will be president on January 20. I know the president has not conceded and he may never concede, but he will not be in the White House on January 21," Dole told the Kansas City Star in mid-December.
