They’re real, and they aren’t going away no matter how hard Mr. Biden and his running mate, California Sen. Kamala Harris, attempt to walk them back. It’s also fair to point out that neither statement makes any effort to modify the campaign’s promise to ban fracking on federal lands. He sees a fundamental misunderstanding about the nature of fracking and where it is deployed as being a big part of the problem. The more definitive positions taken by Biden and Harris this past week may help to resolve some of the confusion they have created for themselves and their supporters. But if the staking out of this firmer fracking position starts to tear at the Democratic ticket’s fragile support from the Bernie Sanders/Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez faction of the voter base, there could be more triangulation and confusion yet to come.
