A “bhandara” organiser was fined ₹50,000 by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) for using thermoplastic material and littering on Sunday as part of its efforts to ban single-use plastic, it said in a statement. Field staff found that proper measures had not been taken to collect and dispose of used plates and were instead littered, the SDMC said. The organisers were issued “Section 15 of the NGT Act for using thermoplastic material and under Section 317 and 351 for littering” the statement read. As part of its efforts to ban single-use plastic, the SDMC said that officials have been told to remain vigilant and keep a check on such functions. In a recent meeting of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation, councillors proposed setting up of a “crockery bank” to provide for such events.
