Better traffic signalling system required near airport

Due to the absence of an elaborate traffic signalling arrangement at Chennai international airport, pedestrians are hard put to cross Grand Southern Trunk (GST) Road. “Many motorists speed and don’t bother to stop while taking a left turn towards St. Thomas Mount,” says S. Thirumalai, someone who often navigates this section on foot. Traffic police personnel deployed at this signal remain mute spectators to the chaos caused by motorists. Pedestrians signal to motorists to stop, but the appeal goes unheeded. A Chennai Traffic Police official says, “We have been warning motorists against ignoring the pedestrian signal.”
