The Nonfiction Producers Association (NPA) recently unleashed a firestorm with the unveiling of the results of its premiere survey of cable television networks. The bigger networks typically have more budget flexibility and the freedom to swing for the fences, creatively and fiscally. They can also afford to take the chance on a project that is high risk and possibly high reward. Networks executives are irked and grumbling, asking for their rebuttal and a chance to rank the production companies and share the annoyances that they put up with from the producers. While some have stated that it would only be fair for the networks to rank the production companies, they already do that indirectly by deciding to buy, or reject, a project.
