Sky-lovers are excited for a cosmic happening this weekend, as three rare moon effects converge. The entire eclipse will last nearly 3.5 hours, starting with the partial eclipse, when Earth’s shadow crosses the moon, at 10:34 p.m. The first full moon of January is traditionally called a wolf moon, supposedly named because hungry wolves howl in midwinter. When this total lunar eclipse reaches totality the moon will be rust red. Another reason to experience this celestial sight: This will be the last total eclipse of the moon until 2021.
