Presidential hopefuls are stepping out of the shadows, but their 2020 announcements are far from spontaneous. WSJ’s Shelby Holliday explains. WASHINGTON—Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders has signed a pledge with the Democratic National Committee to run for president as a Democrat and govern as a member of the party if he wins the White House. Mr. Sanders, a self-described Democratic socialist, has run for office as an independent in Vermont, where there is no party registration. He won re-election last year as an independent for a third term in the Senate, after serving in the House of Representatives for 16 years.
