The hosts began brightly and opened the scoring after 13 minutes when Rotherham defender Sean Raggett deflected a low cross from debutant Josh Cogley into his own net. Rotherham scored a remarkable 42nd-minute equaliser when Stockport goalkeeper Ben Hinchliffe, attempting a long kick forward out of his hands, cleared against teammate Joe Olowu’s back and the ball deflected into the Hatters’ net. Dave Challinor’s side took a controversial 55th-minute lead when Josh Stokes turned home Kyle Wootton’s headed centre, angering Rotherham players who felt goalkeeper Cameron Dawson had been impeded as he tried to claim the ball. Substitute Sam Nombe finished off a slick passing move to draw the away side level five minutes later, but Stockport went ahead for a third time after 76 minutes when Andresson stabbed home after a chip from Stokes had been cleared off the line. Nombe rattled the woodwork in stoppage time as Rotherham rallied again, but Stockport held on to claim the three points.
