BERLIN — Only a few weeks ago, the political career of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appeared set to end, amid scandals and looming indictments. But after Tuesday’s elections, the incumbent will probably be able to form a new government once again, seizing a fifth term as prime minister. If things go according to his plan, Netanyahu will become Israel’s longest-serving prime minister this summer. But why do politicians like Netanyahu keep getting reelected, whereas others fail almost immediately? The ruling party’s subsequent new leader then usually becomes the new prime minister.
