Ben Wallace has warned the UK cannot 'swoop into' Syria and bring home British Islamic State fighters against their will because they could claim they were 'illegally rendered', causing prosecutions against them to collapse. The Defence Secretary said the fact that the UK does not have an extradition treaty with Syria made it difficult to fulfil international obligations to repatriate Britons who fought for the terror group. But Mr Wallace said the current legal landscape made it hard for the UK to act. He also suggested that it may not even be possible to convict Islamic State fighters and their families who fled Britain for Syria if they do return. Mr Wallace said that much of the evidence which would be required to bring a successful prosecution would belong to another country.
