Like many other Jews from Eastern Europe, they came to South Africa, where the government wanted to boost its white population. They even assisted the Communist Party leader Harry Snitcher when he stood in a local government election. On my return to Cape Town I attempted to join the Communist Party, but it had been banned. Nevertheless, despite the tedium, I have to concede that Parliament remains the arena of national political contestation.
