Beijing to rule on district councilors' oath taking, disqualifications expected

China's top legislative body could be making new announcements this weekend which in effect could cause the disqualification of large number of pro-democracy district councilors, local media reported. Local outlet HK01 reported that the committee will be looking into oath taking by those holding public offices, which will include district councilors. Sources expected it will involve quite a number of councilors, and would be sufficient to change the pro-democracy camp’s influence in district council. Meanwhile, sources also said Beijing could make changes to the composition of the 1,200-member Election Committee for electing the Chief Executive. Having won a landslide victory in last year's district council election, the pro-democracy camp could sweep all 117 seats in the district council category.
