The BBC’s three-parter about the Jeremy Thorpe scandal offers a cathartic chance to rip through the 1960s and 1970s adventures of the one MP we know of who was accused of trying to pop off his gay former lover in a desperate bid to remain leader of the Liberal Party. The creative team is impressive: it’s scripted by Russell T Davies from A Very English Scandal, the book by John Preston; is directed by Stephen Frears; and stars Hugh Grant as Jeremy Thorpe MP and Ben Whishaw as his lover Norman Scott.
