Given a pair of Japanese melons sold at auction for more than $61,000 earlier this year, a $66 eight-pack of singular strawberries seems modestly priced in comparison. As Eater reports, however, the price hasn’t dissuaded some of New York City’s finest chefs from featuring Oishii’s Omakase berry on their menus. Restaurants including Atera, Atomix, Sushi Yasuda and Sushi Ginza Onodera, and acclaimed pastry shop Dominique Ansel Bakery have all since offered the hand-picked strawberries on their menus. And previous forays into luxury fruit at Canadian restaurants suggest there may be an appetite for it. Given the care that’s gone into cultivating, growing and selecting these strawberries, surely one succulent sample is worth at least the price of a fast-food chicken sandwich.
