I was nothing more than human ballast but I can claim a victory on the water over New Zealand yachting's golden boys Peter Burling and Blair Tuke. It was just a practice race for Saturday's in-port race for the Volvo Ocean Race in Auckland but on a sporting CV as thin as a piece of sail cloth, I'll take it. A slick gybe increased a sudden lead and there was no way back for our esteemed rivals, Tuke fighting for second and Burling at the wrong end of the fleet. We were still battling up the first leg when Tuke came past in the opposite direction with a huge lead. I trudged away from my golden moment, the only consolation being a thought that maybe I'd done the great Burling and Tuke a favour.
