Bear Flat Dispatch: Haying season

The grasshoppers are thicker than I thought they would be this summer, so it was good to see haying weather show up in the second week of July so we could start cutting hay before the grasshoppers ate it. For many farmers and ranchers across Canada, haying is a summer ritual that is very weather reliant. First, you need the right weather to make a decent hay crop, and then the right weather to put that crop up. On several occasions we have seen bears doing the same thing in fairly close proximity to the people. I’m enjoying the praise for now, but can only imagine how disappointed my phone will be when haying is over.
