Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Abubakar Suleiman has launched a programme for the empowerment of women and girls in marginalized communities for better well-being through education and advocacy initiated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in collaboration with the Government of Japan. Speaking during the launching at Command Guest House Bauchi on Thursday, the Speaker commended UNESCO and the Government of Japan for choosing Bauchi State as one of the three States in the country to benefit from the programme, saying it is a significant intervention to women and girl child, who are the most vulnerable. Consequently, we intensified effort through oversight functions by the relevant committees of the House, especially committee on Women Affairs to see that women and children are well protected against all forms of violence, such as rape, domestic violence etc,” he added. According to her, the main beneficiaries of the project are women and girls in marginalized communities whohave been hard hit with gender-based violence due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
