Battle of Midway 75th anniversary commemorated at World War II Memorial

Six survivors of the Battle of Midway attended a ceremony in Washington Saturday to mark the 75th anniversary of the pivotal World War II battle. “The Battle of Midway was the turning point in the war in the Pacific,” attendees were told during the commemoration at the National World War II Memorial. The speaker was former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole, the memorial’s national chairman, and a decorated and wounded World War II combat veteran. Six months after Pearl Harbor, the Imperial Japanese Navy wanted Midway to stage more attacks on Hawaii and possibly the West Coast. The Navy sank four Japanese carriers and inflicted permanent damage on the Japanese Navy.
