Barekese residents, traders protest over relocation of proposed market project

The demonstrators argue that Barekese has suitable land for the project and is the best location to boost economic activities. Speaking to the media on Monday January 19,2026, the leader of the demonstration, Dickson Amankwa, said the protest was jointly organised by traders and NDC members to demand development for Barekase. "We cannot allow our DCE to take development of Barekase for granted," he stated, calling on President John Dramani Mahama to intervene. The demonstrators presented a petition to the DCE, received by District Coordinating Director Solomon Kwaku Adjei, who assured them their concerns would be addressed. The protest saw residents, traders, and NDC members marching through Barekese streets to register their displeasure over the proposed relocation.
