Bare stand on death penalty, Atienza urges poll betsBy The Manila TimesBuhay party-list Rep. Jose “Lito” Atienza Jr. urged candidates for the Senate and the House of Representatives to declare their position on the proposal to reinstate the death penalty. In March 2017, the House passed on third and final reading a bill that seeks to reinstate the death penalty for drug-related offenses. The death penalty was abolished in 2006. And the modern world has come to accept that prolonged imprisonment is just as effective,” Atienza said.”The death penalty leaves no room for rectification. Atienza has introduced a substitute bill that seeks the imposition of “qualified reclusion perpetua” on the “worst criminal offenders.” The proposed penalty is equal to a 40-year imprisonment.
