The Ford government will get a lot of applause from parents with its decision to ban cellphones from classrooms. Ontario’s students, Education Minister Lisa Thompson said on Tuesday, “need to be able to focus on their learning — not their cellphones.”Student on phone in a classroom. The Toronto District School Board, to name just one, prohibited phones in classrooms for four years before raising the white flag back in 2011. This is a government that likes simple slogans and easy solutions, and “ban cellphones” fits the bill. But let’s just keep in mind that this is about politics as much as it is about education.
