Banning handguns will help stop them from falling into the wrong hands

Stop ducking a handgun ban, Editorial, Oct. 14The Star’s editorial board is to be commended for its excellent editorial urging a national handgun ban. But George M. McCaig’s letter on Oct. 18, in which he suggests such a ban would have no effect on the criminal element, rings hollow to me. Let the facts speak for themselves: 82 mass shootings in the U.S. between 1982 and 2019 involved guns legally obtained. Over the past 10 years, the average number of deaths from gun violence per year in Canada has been about 750, whereas in the U.S. it hovers around 36,000. I applaud the Star’s position that it’s time to “bite the proverbial bullet and ban private handguns in Canada.”
