Banks must do better in caring for vulnerable customers


The Code of Banking Practice requires banks to communicate clearly and effectively, and treat customers fairly and reasonably. Some customers will need extra support, and nowadays there is a clear expectation on banks to respond to that need. By the time Covid-19 swept the globe, the scene was set for banks to step up and provide extra support for customers experiencing financial stress and hardship. In terms of the financial harm caused by gambling, we are pleased to see banks are putting mechanisms in place to better support customers. The Banking Ombudsman Scheme offers free and independent help to bank customers.
