Banking hit as staff and officers strike work

New Delhi, Feb. 28 (Agencies): Branches of public sector banks remained closed or did not operate on Tuesday as staff and officers struck work over various demands, including accountability of top executives for the mounting bad loans. The day’s strike, called by the United Forum of Bank Unions, an umbrella body that claims a base of a million staff and officers, hit cash deposits and withdrawals at branches, and cheque clearances. The strike affected services in Tamil Nadu and neighbouring Puducherry, with 70,000 employees in public and private banks took part. “They even did not bother to talk on providing compensation for extra hours put in by bank staff after demonetisation,” AIBEA general secretary C.H. Of the nine UFBU members, the two affiliated to the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh -- the National Organisation of Bank Workers and the National Organisation of Bank Officers – did not join the strike.
