The Bangladesh Consulate General in New York has lodged complaints with local authorities after an attempted attack on Information and Broadcasting Advisor Mahfuj Alam by Awami League activists. The incident occurred on Sunday outside its offices ahead of an event marking the first anniversary of the July-August Uprising, where Mahfuj was the chief guest. The consulate alleged that the demonstrators had gathered with “violent intent” to disrupt its programme and attack the chief guest, chanting anti-government slogans and hurling abuse. “They lingered around the consulate with Awami League flags until midnight with the intention of harassing or endangering the chief guest,” the statement said. Mahfuj was pelted with eggs and water bottles as he entered the consulate for the event, while protesters also cracked a glass door.
