Ban on Latin abbreviations, eg etc and ie

Latin abbreviations are to be barred from government websites because they may confuse people whose first language is not English. Eventually all Latin abbreviations will be edited out. The terms can also confuse voice technology programmes for blind and partially sighted people — “eg”, short for exempli gratia, often being misread as “egg”. Officials who write material for Whitehall websites have been instructed to use alternatives. The term eg appears more than 4,000 times on pages published on the gov.uk portal.
