The biggest problem facing MLB heading into 2019 is the continuing struggle to build new ballparks in Oakland and Tampa Bay. Because of a limited anti-trust exemption, MLB owners have the legal right to approve any franchise transfer by a 75% vote. In Tampa Bay, the negotiations for a new ballpark appear to be over. But MLB owners don’t have to make the same mistake in Tampa. In the end, MLB held Washington hostage long enough that taxpayers fully funded the $701.3 million cost of Nationals Park.
