Just over a three-hour drive from Dhaka, located between Sreemongol and Maulvi Bazar lies a large shallow lake named Baikka Beel, which is popular among casual nature lovers, serious birders and wildlife researchers alike. Set up as a wetland sanctuary in 2003 where fishing is banned, it enjoys a thriving bird population. As the weather inches slowly towards the semblance of winter, the lake explodes with life and colour as varieties of birds arrive to feed and breed, viewed from a safe distance, from one of the sanctuary’s two watchtowers set up for just this purpose
