Bahrain prevents 'terrorist attack' backed by Iran: report

Bahraini officials reportedly said Sunday that the country had foiled an attempted terrorist attack carried out by agents backed by Iran's Revolutionary Guard. The Associated Press and Reuters reported that a Bahraini newspaper and Saudi state television, citing Bahrain's Interior Ministry, indicated that the halted attack was apparently targeting a "foreign delegation." A Saudi state TV report indicated that nine suspected militants had been arrested, while nine others believed to be linked to the plot were thought to be in Iran. A Politico report last week indicated that U.S. intelligence reports had revealed a possible Iranian assassination plot targeting the U.S. ambassador to South Africa, Lana Marks. The State Department announced Saturday that it would reimpose United Nations sanctions against Iran despite the vast majority of the U.N. Security Council's rejection of U.S. authority to do so.
