Bahrain jails relatives of activist who fled to the UK

Sayed Ahmed Alwadaei fled to Britain after taking part in anti-government protests in 2011 AlamyBahrain sentenced the relatives of a British-based activist to three years in prison on terrorism charges yesterday, a move denounced by human rights organisations as an act of retribution for his work highlighting abuses in the Gulf state. Sayed Ahmed Alwadaei fled Bahrain after taking part in anti-government protests in 2011 for which he was arrested, tortured and sentenced to six months in prison. He was granted leave to remain in Britain as a refugee and set up the Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy, which has accused senior members of Bahrain’s royal family of involvement in serious human rights abuses. The targeting of his family began in October 2016 when he took part in a protest against King Hamad’s visit to Downing Street.
