BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — Baguio City, the country’s summer capital, is the first in the country to be named by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as one of 64 worldwide in its Creative Cities Network. A global initiative to improve urban living standards by developing industries based on innovation, the Creative Cities Network was created in 2004 “to promote cooperation with and among cities that have identified creativity as a strategic factor for sustainable urban development,” the UNESCO website said. It uses the framework of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which sets international priorities for economic, social and environmental development. Other cities joining Baguio in the crafts and folk art category include Tunis in Tunisia, Madaba in Jordan and Carrara in Italy. The next annual meeting of the Creative Cities Network is scheduled in June next year in Poland.
