Badminton is one of the few sports that overachieved at last month’s regional sports extravaganza, when it returned four SEA gold medals (women’s team, doubles, mixed doubles and men’s doubles) for the first in 58 years. However none of the gold medals came from the singles events and that had prompted the association to search for a new specialist singles coach. “What we achieved in the SEA Games is beyond expectation. We won more gold medals than Indonesia, which has always been the No 1 badminton country in SEA Games,” said badminton boss Patama Leesawadtrakul. We were disappointed we didn’t win a singles gold medal, especially in the women’s singles, in which we had high hopes.
