External USB drives are not as cumbersome as they once were — and the prices have gotten smaller as well. For example, Western Digital’s Passport series of lightweight USB external drives offers at least a terabyte of storage for $60 or less. The OWC Envoy Pro Mini line of portable solid-state drives (which tops out at 480 gigabytes for $270) features travel-worthy metal cases. The Wirecutter, a product-recommendations site owned by The New York Times, has suggestions for smaller-capacity USB drives and other portable storage options. For space-saving portable storage, packing extra memory cards and just keeping the photos backed up on them is another option as you travel.
