Colonel Sir Archibald David Stirling, always known as David, was born in Keir House near Doune on November 15, 1915. The SAS also blew up railways and in the 15 months after its formation, the SAS had become so feared that Rommel nicknamed Stirling the ‘phantom major’. Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery was quoted as saying: “The boy Stirling is quite mad, quite, quite mad. After the war, Stirling moved to Rhodesia and founded the Capricorn Africa Society to promote a non-racial Africa. The striking monument to Stirling stands on the A820 on the north side of the road between the A9 and Doune.
