Separatist Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front leader Mohammad Yasin Bhat said they would try to persuade the Pandit family to stay. In 2014, when The Telegraph had tracked down the couple, Jagannath and Sarla spoke of how they had felt like "aliens" in all the years they spent living in exile in Jammu. The family - the couple have five daughters - had fled Kashmir in 1992 and their house was later burned down. Much of the violence after the death of Hizb commander Burhan Wani has taken place in south Kashmir where around 35 youths have died and hundreds have been injured in firing by security forces.
