When we stepped off the wharf and on to the pebbled beach at Catherine Cove on d’Urville Island, it was like time stood still. D’Urville Island Wilderness Resort, which sleeps over 51 people, became our little “home away from home” during a recent weekend away with my partner and toddler. Catherine Cove is located about 8km by boat from French Pass, with the resort nestled on the eastern flank of the remote island. With no crowds of tourists, cellphone reception (except Vodafone) or shops to busy yourself with, d’Urville Island is unlike most other popular Kiwi holiday destinations. Something magical occurs when you step into the rugged New Zealand wilderness, and d’Urville Island offers just that experience – but the island’s extremes and remoteness are not for the faint of heart.
