Baby's fractures would not have shown as bruises – doctor

Broken bones on a baby only weeks old would not have shown up as bruises, a trial in the High Court at Christchurch was told. "These fractures are often seen with no bruising," said consultant paediatrician, Dr Alison Daniell, who had seen injured baby Carter Hutton when he was taken to hospital. She noted that the baby's mother, Megan Hutton, a first time mother, had sought advice from her mother, and from a doctor and midwife about the baby's crying inconsolably for periods of 20 to 30 minutes. The doctor said the crying from the discomfort of the fractures would not have been distinguishable from normal crying. There were no signs of bone disease and the child had no sign of further fractures during the further year that he lived.
