The World Health Organization describes antimicrobial resistance as one of the top global public health and development threats. It has been forecast that, by 2050, more people will die from antimicrobial resistance than both cancer and diabetes combined. This research is the largest ever screening of intestinal microbiota for colistin resistance in Nigeria. These genes carry resistance to the antibiotic colistin, and can spread between bacteria, furthering colistin resistance.
