Listen to this articleSecurity officials expect the damage at one of the 11 PTT petrol stations hit by bombs in the far South on Jan 11, 2026. (Photo supplied)Thai security authorities say they have clear evidence linking a series of coordinated arson and bombing attacks in the southern border provinces on the weekend to the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) insurgent group. Investigators believe the insurgents deliberately exploited security deployments for Children’s Day and local elections to strike high-profile economic targets, according to the Internal Security Operations Command (Isoc). Pol Col Thatchapichai Jarnwaranon, deputy commander of the Southern Border Investigation Unit, said the insurgents used improvised explosive devices concealed in gas cylinders and fire extinguishers, triggered by digital timers and remote control. The near-simultaneous explosions at around 12.50am on Sunday indicated careful coordination consistent with BRN tactics, officials said.
