Abebe Aemro Selassie, an Ethiopian national, will retire as Director of the African Department at the International Monetary Fund on May 1, 2026, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva announced on Tuesday. During his tenure, the IMF added a twenty-fifth chair to its Executive Board, strengthening the voice of sub-Saharan Africa. Abebe joined the IMF in 1994 and has spent more than three decades at the institution. His previous roles include Deputy Director of the African Department, mission chief for Portugal and South Africa, division chief of the Regional Studies Division, and senior resident representative in Uganda. He also worked on IMF programmes in Turkey, Thailand, Romania, and Estonia, as well as on policy and operational reviews and economic research.
