BOJ Reports Unrealized Bond Loss for First Time in 17 Years

TOKYO--The Bank of Japan reported an unrealized loss on its Japanese government-bond holdings for the first time in 17 years amid rising global bond yields. It was the first time since March 2006 that the BOJ suffered a full-year loss in its JGB holdings. Reflecting interest-rate increases by the Federal Reserve and other central banks, global bond yields rose sharply during the last fiscal year. The yield on 10-year JGBs rose as high as 0.545% in January due to expectations for a policy change by the BOJ. The 10-year JGB yield stood at 0.43% Monday.
