Police have detained BNP leaders Mirza Abbas and Moazzem Hossain Alal amid violent antigovernment protests in parts of Bangladesh, including Dhaka. Harunor Rashid, chief of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch, said on Tuesday night that Abbas and Alal had been brought to the DB headquarters. Abbas is a member of the party’s policymaking Standing Committee, while Alal is a joint secretary general. Both are accused in cases over recent violence, besides past charges over similar incidents. Before them, Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was arrested in cases over an attack on the chief justice’s house and the death of a police constable in clashes during the BNP’s October 28 rally.
