BMC makes Suryanamaskara mandatory in civic schools

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday passed by majority vote a proposal to make Suryanamaskara mandatory for students at the 1,285 schools it runs in Greater Mumbai. The resolution was supported by the BJP, which has 31 members in the 227-member BMC, and Shiv Sena which leads BMC’s ruling alliance with 75 members. Earlier this month, Samita Kamble, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) corporator from Mumbai’s eastern suburb of Mulund had moved a proposal demanding mandatory Suryanamaskara in all civic schools. Though the Sena was not in favour of making Suryanamaskara mandatory and instead proposed martial arts, it eventually voted for the resolution. Samajwadi Party BMC group leader Rais Shaikh said the party would now approach the municipal commissioner with a plea to reject the resolution.
