The immediate objective of Rathod, a 26-year-old law student, is to obtain the gun permits for at least four members for self-defence. Rathod has been attending all the meetings organised by various Dalit outfits that have sprung up in the wake of the Una incident. In Vadli village, members the upper caste not only boycotted the Dalits but imposed a fine of Rs 2,200 if anybody hired a Dalit labourer or provided foodgrain. The fine was Rs 1,100 if any member of upper caste interacted with a Dalit in the village. He said the social boycott was necessitated by the "foolish behaviour" of an inebriated Dalit who went around abusing everybody in the village.
